The airport of Melilla ( IATA code : MLN , ICAO code : GEML ) is only 3 kilometers from the city center of Melilla ( Spain ). Its location makes this airport an autonomous city with different national destinations. The airport becomes international on July 30, 2012 by announcement of the airline Helitt to make a route with Casablanca ( Morocco ), although this route did not materialize, in addition it would be done with stopovers in Malaga and Madrid. At the moment it only has national destinations.
Melilla airport, despite its low traffic, is located next to the Moroccan border and, as there is no agreement with Morocco , the aircraft must perform difficult maneuvers during takeoffs and landings to avoid entering the Moroccan airspace . Even so, there is no cause for concern because until now there have been no problems related to that.

Melilla (/məˈliːjə/ mə-LEE-yə; Spanish: [meˈliʎa], locally [meˈliʝa]; Berber languages: Mřič, ⵎⵔⵉⵜⵙ; Arabic: مليلية, Maliliyyah) is a Spanish autonomous city located on the north coast of Africa, sharing a border with Morocco, with an area of 12.3 km2 (4.7 sq mi). Melilla, along with Ceuta, is one of two permanently inhabited Spanish cities in mainland Africa. It was part of the Province of Málaga until 14 March 1995, when the city’s Statute of Autonomy was passed.
Melilla, like Ceuta, was a free port before Spain joined the European Union. In 2011 it had a population of 78,476, made up of Catholics of Iberian origin (primarily from Andalusia and Catalonia), ethnic Riffian Berbers and a small number of Sephardic Jews and Sindhi Hindus. Spanish and Riffian-Berber are the two most widely spoken languages, with Spanish as the only official language.
